Alyssa Bustamante, 15, an adult charge in murder of 9 year old

Alyssa Bustamante is a 15 year old in a world of trouble. Alyssa is being tried as an adult for the cold-blooded murder of 9 year old Elizabeth Olten. In case you don’t remember the Olten case, Elizabeth is the 9 year old Missourian that went missing days after the body of Somer Thompson was found in a Georgian landfill.

Alyssa Bustamante is being tried as an adult despite her young age because a Missouri judge doesn’t think that the state’s juvenile detention facilities are adequate for someone who committed a crime as cold and calculated as pre-meditated murder. Bustamante told authorities that she killed Elizabeth Olten just to feel what it was like to kill someone. She also dug two graves near her home days before she killed the 9 year old girl.

Alyssa Bustamante strangled, stabbed, and slit Elizabeth Olten’s throat.

Our neighbors to the west in Missouri are likely very saddened and horrified by the acts. The Alyssa Bustamante case and the Shaniya Davis case are two recent reminders that the world isn’t always safe and streets are full of horrific predators.

Should the 15 year old be tried as an adult? I think so, although I am not quite sure what the appropriate sentence would be for someone this young. It’s obvious from her admission and how she killed the young girl that Alyssa Bustamante is not normal. She is in need of some serious help. Perhaps spending the rest of her life in a state mental institution would be warranted?

There are thousands of missing children in the United States. I urge you all to take a moment and visit the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children Web site and familiarize yourself with the faces of missing children. If you see them, follow the instructions on the site in order to report your spotting.
